Kelly Pavlik will actually have to move up to (almost) light heavyweight to find suitable opponents?
On July 17th, Kelly Pavlik's promoter Bob Arum announced that they had reached a deal with Golden Boy Promotions. The deal involved a fight between Pavlik and Bernard Hopkins to take place on October 18th, 2008, at a catch-weight of 170 pounds (five pounds below light heavyweight). Due to the catch-weight of 170 pounds, this will be a non-title fight.
The undefeated Pavlik, the reigning WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine middleweight world champion, is coming off a third round knockout over the then undefeated Gary Lockett, also in Atlantic City.
Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins is much older (43 years old) and has a wealth of experience, having taken part in 55 professional fights, many of them big ones. He currently sports a professional record of 48-5-1. As mentioned, Hopkins has been involved in a number of "big" fights against the likes of: Jermain Taylor, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Antonio Tarver.
In the end, the biggest factor in this fight will likely be the near-twenty year age difference. Hopkins is scrappy and competitive, but it's hard to believe that a 43-year old man will be able to topple one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. Not to take anything about from Hopkins, but there is a reason why this line is set as it is. Even at the catch-weight of 170 pounds, Hopkins is a huge underdog in this fight. Sure it may be a non-title fight, but don't expect Pavlik to drop his guard and let Hopkins beat him. He's just not the type of fighter (or person) that is going to lose his focus like that.
Pavlik has opened betting as a strong -350 favorite. Bernard Hopkins, on the other hand, is a +275 underdog.
Vegas is clearly expecting that this fight will go the distance, as the over/under is currently set at 11 1/2 rounds. The over is currently set at -205, while the under is set at +165. This means that if you wanted to bet the under, then you would need to wager $205 in order to win $100 back. If you wanted to wager on a shorter fight taking place, then a $100 wager would result in a total profit of $165.
