The main prize that everyone has their eyes on is the pot of gold waiting at the end of the 5,000 dollar buy-in tournament which is scheduled to start on May 21st.

Last year the event was a 9,800 dollar buy-in and was won by Peter “Nordberg” Feldman.  En route to pocketing a cool $532,950, he outlasted such tournament veterans such as Gavin Smith and George Babin.  Smith placed in, or close, to the final table of nearly a dozen events in the 2006 season, but it was underdog Feldman who beat him heads up for his only tournament cash of the year. 

Even though this year’s NL championship is only 5,000 dollars, this year’s WSOP circuit event is offering 13 events, as opposed to only seven last year.  They will still have the ladies only event, which is a 200 dollar buy-in and will be held on the 20th.  This year they are also offering a stud-tournament, which is rarely seen at WSOP circuit events and that will be played on the 14th.  Also new to the New Orleans event this year will be a Pot Limit Omaha with re-buys on May 15th.  A lot of pros like this event because it is something different from the slew of Hold’em events that these tournaments usually have.  If you are wishing to participate in this event be advised that you will probably be playing against some very stiff competition.  The buy-in for this event will be 500 dollars. 

Also during the course of the 13 events there will be satellite tournaments running to help you get a cheaper fee into the championship event.  These games will also have a buy-in of 500 dollars and the complete list of tournament dates is listed below.

The Harrah’s New Orleans casino poker room itself is one of the best ones outside of Las Vegas and Atlantic City.  When the casino is not busy hosting a poker tournament, the poker room holds just about 20 tables and spreads out many different games at many different prices.  For the tournament you can be assured that they have plenty of room to add more tables, even sending some to other parts of the casino.  This is a “problem” that the poker room cherishes though, because the more people that show up to the event the more it shows that poker is ready to regain the momentum of becoming a big time attraction that it had in New Orleans before the unfortunate events.
