Thanksgiving is a time to remember everything you are thankful for. It celebrates time with your family, and allows everyone to settle down to enjoy the best meal of the year. It also is one of the biggest football days in America. When you are done chowing down and are too bloated to do anything else. That is the time to turn on your television, pop open your favorite beverage, and enjoy some football. This year provides a very excellent Pac-10 match-up pitting the 11th ranked University of Southern California Trojans (8-2, 5-2 Pac-10) against the Sun Devils of Arizona State (9-1, 6-1 Pac-10).
Usually when your team is ranked 11th in the nation it is considered a very successful season. However, that is not the case when you are USC. Two losses, including one against 40 point underdog Stanford has put a bit of a black cloud over a team that has become accustomed to playing for national championships. While the title game may be out of the picture, a very high profile game may not be. With a win against the once defeated Sun Devils they can just right back into the national spotlight and be able to call themselves among the best teams in the nation. USC is led by senior running back Chauncey Washington. At the beginning of the season the Trojans were playing close to five different players at the position, but Washington has solidified himself as the best of the bunch after a 220 yard performance against the California Bears last week. Senior quarterback John David Booty has put up decent numbers, but less than stellar when compared to past USC quarterbacks. For the season he has 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions with 1528 passing yards. He has missed some time due to injury however, after missing three games he has played the last two. USC will need both of these players to perform to have a fair chance against Arizona St.
The Sun Devils are enjoying their best season in years, and with a victory here can almost promise themselves a BCS bowl. Quarterback Rudy Carpenter will most likely be a Heisman trophy candidate next year because of the numbers he is putting up this year. He has 20 touchdowns with eight intercepts, but has thrown for over 2500 yards. Carpenter is coming off a lackluster performance against UCLA, where he was only able to throw for 200 yards in a closer than expected win. But, the team would rather win then see his over 300 yard performance in a loss to Oregon the week before. Maybe he can get it all together and get the good numbers in the win against the Trojans.
Arizona State has been tough at home this year, and I think that may make the difference in this one. On paper this is a very tough game to call, but USC has failed to show up for some games this year. Even at full strength this would be a tough game for the Trojans. I’m picking Arizona State 28, USC 20.
