West Virginia Mountaineers (2-0) vs. Maryland Terrapins (2-0)
The West Virginia Mountaineers will endure an early season test when they visit the Maryland Terrapins on Thursday. While the Mountaineers are currently 16 point favorites, the Terrapins are always a tough team to play at home at Byrd stadium in College Park, Maryland. The question is, will home field advantage be enough to down the best tandem in college football of quarterback Pat White and running back Steve Slaton?
My guess is no. While it’s true that West Virginia had some early problems against Marshall in the first half of that game, they rebounded well in the second half and I expect that to continue into this game. Slaton is averaging over six yards per carry, and has already scored five touchdowns. White is averaging an astounding 8.2 yards per carry, as a quarterback. Maryland will have to rely on the rushing of senior Keon Lattimore who has five rushing TD’s already, but have came against 1-AA school Villanova, and Florida International. While Maryland’s defense is tough, it seems to be a notch below where they were in the years past, and that spell trouble for fans of the Terps. I think this could be close early, which West Virginia pulling away late and a final score of 45-21.
College Football Pick for Saturday September 15th
USC Trojans vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers
An early season match-up pits the number one school in the country against a squad that has a great tradition of winning themselves. But, Nebraska will have to show up big time if they have any chance of being USC, who looks to be stacked. Playing at home will help the Cornhuskers, who on game day bring 81,000 of their closest friends to cheer them on at Memorial Stadium.
Nebraska opened the season with a beautiful offensive explosion, scoring 52 a decent Nevada Wolf Pack squad. However, this past week they failed to live up to those expectations and needed to hold on to defeat Wake Forest (0-2) by a score of 20-17. If the offense shows up they have a chance to make this a shootout. Running back Marlon Lucky already has 323 yards this season, including 233 against the Wolf Pack. USC on the other hand has only played one game, a 38-10 win at Idaho. The Trojans started slow, but a 17 point 3rd quarter put the game clearly out of reach. There are high expectations for the Trojans this year. In years past they always seem to lose a winnable game late in the season win they perhaps start to tire. But, being only the second game of the year, and having a week off, I like USC in this one. USC are ten point favorites in this one, but I expect them to win by a little more. I like something around 28-14 for a final.
